Greetings //FirstName//,

It's officially Fall in Amador County, California.  The harvest is winding down, the grapes are settling in their tanks and barrels, and we're loving the cooler and slower days.  The hills and valleys in the Sierra Foothills are awash in orange, green and red leaves that look like a stained glass mosaic, and there's nothing better than basking in the warmth of the sun with a light breeze, sipping something refreshing and lush, while staring out over the vineyards that have given us yet another great harvest.

The 2017 crop marks Scott's 44th harvest, and if you ask him, he'll likely tell you this will be the best vintage yet.  But he says that every year.  And every year, he's been right.  As we celebrate another successful harvest, we're dedicating this newsletter to one of Scott's favorite white wines, Riesling.  As a German-trained winemaker, he enjoys making a variety of styles of Riesling, from bubbly and crisp, to mouth-watering and lush, to sweet and decadent.  No matter which you choose, Riesling is the perfect white wine for fall.

What's in this edition of the Harvey Wines Insider:

FROM THE WINEMAKER
"RIESLING GRAPES FROM ONE VINEYARD - MADE THREE WAYS"

In this video, Scott walks us through the three different styles of Riesling he makes.
A sparkling Riesling, a dry Riesling, and an ice style Riesling.

The grapes for these three wines all come from the Nelson Vineyard in Mendocino County, CA

BLOG OF THE MONTH
"WITH SO MANY RIESLING STYLES, FIND ONE YOU LOVE!"

If there is one wine that is often misunderstood, it is Riesling. With the wide variety of Riesling styles, ranging from very dry to extremely sweet, it can be difficult to decipher which one will suit your taste. In this blog, we will discuss the different styles of Riesling, specifically the German styles, and what key words to look for when choosing a Riesling you're sure to love.

FEATURED WINE & SHIPPING SPECIAL
"THE PERFECT WHITE WINE FOR FALL"

As we bid farewell to summer and gladly welcome in fall, the crisp and refreshing white wines we enjoyed over the summer are now replaced with full-bodied and robust red wines.  Not so fast!  If you're looking for a great white wine to enjoy year round, you simply must choose Riesling.  The 2016 Jana Winery Old Vine Riesling from Mendocino County, CA, is an off-dry Riesling with balanced acidity and natural sweetness.  This wine is made in the Halbtrocken Kabinett style, meaning it is produced from high quality, first choice grapes and crafted in an off-dry style with low alcohol and crisp, mouth-watering flavors and acidity.  This engaging wine has flavors of watercress, slate, cloves and orange blossoms.  A must have wine for all of your holiday dinners.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
"MUSHROOM & SMOKED GOUDA FLATBREAD"

The natural acidity in Riesling, along with low alcohol and crisp, refreshing flavors, makes this a "go-to" wine for a variety of different foods.  Super dry styles pair nicely with spicy dishes and appetizers.  Off-dry styles with a hint of residual sugar complement a heartier, more complex offering, while the dessert style Rieslings, are great to serve with (or as) dessert.  This month, we have found a recipe from Blue Apron of a rustic fall meal of Smoked Gouda & Mushroom Flatbread with a Kale & Apple Salad, perfect to pair with the 2016 Jana Old Vine Riesling from Mendocino County.
